Dental Device With Bad 9 Pins USB Port Ripped Off Board Repaired
A guy who lives nearby brought a dental device for repair and he explained that the device is working fine except the 9 pin USB port is ripped off and needs replacement.
To be honest I am not sure what this device does and
I did not bother to ask but it needs the USB port replacement and that is what the plan was.
Looking at the USB port from this side it looks fine but the damage is inside the actual port, take a look.
I do not know how this damage was done to this port but it was a big mess that needed some attention.
With hot air I managed to get the broken port off and cleaned the area to replace it with a new one but there was a problem.
I did not have the same exact replacement.
The one I have in the shop is the same size but the pins are not flat so I had to inform the customer that I need to order the replacement and it might take up to two weeks for the part to arrive and the customer agreed.
I ordered two 9 pins USB port, one to replace the broken one on this dental device and the second one to keep a spare part in the shop.
It fit perfectly on board; I soldered it using my solder iron since the pins were pig and wide and it was a very easy job and fun to do.
The pins are soldered very nicely here; they are shinning due to the use of flux which is recommended every time the soldering job is required.
A moment of truth when I powered on the device with the handle connected to the USB port;
the handle came on indication a job well done here and to that I could say
Mission Accomplished.

Nicely done professional solder work repair! In case the soldering is close to impossible, when pins are way too close to each other, I am starting with using solder paste with hot air or by using my new reflow oven instead. A whole new experience for me. (Although I already had some experience with hotfixing computer mainboards in a previous job.)
