This TV was brought by a new customer referred by another with the complaint that the sound was working, but there was no display. I thought it could be due to backlight issue and that is why I asked him to bring it. It did not strike me at that time that any backlight issue would result in red LED blinking in Sony TV and it won’t come out of standby. Anyhow upon receipt and switching it on, when I tapped the panel gently, I could see that the backlight was lit, indicating that the display was missing.

I opened the TV and checked and ensured that the backlight was well lit at both sides. This was using LCD backlight and I have the same model in use in the home. When I checked with my techie friends to know whether there could be any solution, they said no as this TV used a panel with Chip on Glass (COG) and no short cut methods could be possible. Then I remembered my own case, which I have published before. Kindly have a look at this: https://jestineyong.com/panel-replaced-in-sony-bravia-lcd-tv-model-klv-32bx300-after-all-cutting-tricks-failed/ I switched on the TV and allowed it to remain on for some time, upon which the horizontal lines started appearing and slowly developing and spreading all over: (Don’t mistake my own image as some video picture fed! (LOL)

I told the customer that panel replacement was the only solution and sought whether he had the budget for it. He asked for some time to take a decision and informed me after a couple of days that he was ready and sent me the full advance as per my demand, upon which I got in touch with my techie friend staying around 30Kms away who handled panel related jobs including bonding and laser works.

He gave me a date which was after three days. I loaded the TV in my car on the assigned day and went to hospital for my duty and then left from there directly deciding to lunch out. I reached there by around 12.30 PM and handed over the TV and went out for lunch. He took up the TV for panel replacement after my return. Here are a few pictures which show panel in its metal frame and when taken out (first row) and fixing of the new panel (second row).

Even though my techie friend does not allow anyone to get into the shop and take photos, I was given a special consideration due to my agility even at this old age and his regard for my work. Here are the explanations: The first row (1) Metal frame holding the panel (2) Its outer plastic frame kept aside (3) Metal frame being gently removed (4) The diffusor sheet underneath the old panel. The second row: (1) New panel laid in place (2) Its T-con board interfaced with panel (3) Its LVDS cable fixed to Mother Board (4) The new LVDS cable in place linking panel and Mother Board.

Replacement of a panel in Sony TVs is not that easy. Sony is designed to interact with the panel and ensure that what is fit is its original panel and it is working fine, like a married couple living together! If the panel is changed, it will resort to blinking codes and would not work. So, we have to feed the old panel identity to a memory chip and wire it to the scl/sda of the memory in the board and provide a 3.3V for this additional board. This is an intricate work and requires precision and expertise. My friend is a veteran in this field and he did it in record time. I am not permitted to divulge more details and photos of these as a protection of his business secrecy. After all these works, the TV was fit back and tested with a video in and following was the result:

I carried the TV back home and allowed it to run for some more time and fixed the back cover and stand only the next day after once again running it for hours.

The small label that you find in the middle of the panel is the bar code sticker on the protective film, corner of which is just peeled off a bit and kept. I normally tell the customer to peel off this film which is only a scratch protection while in transit and not to leave it there as the surface heat would then not get dissipated resulting in making the life of the panel short.

Mission accomplished with an experience of different kind, which got qualified to get entry into the collection bag. (Alas, no capacitors were changed (LOL).
