Transformer in SMPS Use AC or DC to Work?

Just want to ask the transformer use for SMPS is use AC or DC? Because what I know is that all transformer use AC to function. It’s confuse me, when I read book, it’s use MOSFET/IC to control the SMPT but IC is DC right. Please advice.. Correct me if i’m wrong.

Answer:

Linear transformer have to use AC to work but switch mode transformer has to use DC supply and it is switched on and off rapidly by a FET to produce AC voltage at the secondary side.
