A young man brought this controller for repair. He explained that it was not charging at all. According to specs of this device, once it was plugged in power, the front light of the controller should have amber light coming on and then off during the charging process. This one was completely dead.

I have used a known good charging cable and still, the device was not charging so the second logical thing to do is checking the charging port on the controller.

I checked the charging port under the microscope and founded to be broken and needing a new replacement.

After I took the four screws on the back of this controller, I was able to see the inside of this device and I headed directly to the source of the problem which is the green board you see in the photo.

From the part number found on the board, I realized this board was not genuine Sony product but it was a cheap Chinese made board. I looked for such board locally and could not find any so the only thing left to do is to replace the charging port itself on that board.

I added a low melt solder to the joints of the charging port and I applied some heat to it and in no time, the port was out.

I cleaned the soldering joints on the board and they were ready to receive the new charging port. Of course, I added some flux to the place and with the same amount of heat I was able to put the charging port back in the place and test it out.

This is the new replaced charging port. As I put the controller back together and tested it out, the outcome of this easy process was revealed.

Good Job well done. charging ports are sometimes damaged by improper plugging in of the charger. Other times due to normal inserting of the charger, the solder that holds the port becomes loose. We have done this type of repair on antenna connectors, on vcrs, and tvs.

Good soldering skills were required and the best option was to replace the charging port. The interesting part you wrote was about the low temperature melting solder you used. Can you mention what type of solder you used? Because I want to solder more easily those multi pin smd controllers that are impossible to do with common solder. I therefor recently bought 20 grams solder paste injection tubes. With 183 degrees Celsius solder in those WNB World Experìence Packs. I hope they qualify for the job.

Albert: thanks man. I do not use a brand name low melt solder but I am using solder that has 180 degrees melting point and so far it has been magic with me. have a blessed day
