Corroded Tracks And Bad Capacitors Found In Sharp Two In One
Make and Model: Sharp WG-293BZ(BK) Two-in-one
Complaint reported: FM Radio stopped working.
Troubleshooting and rectification done: Opened and cleaned the set thoroughly, which had a lot of cockroach eggs stuck in almost all places. Dismantled the set completely. Found corroded tracks and solder joints. As capacitors were found leaked, replaced all the electrolytic capacitors on the board. Retouched all the solder joints. Found the soldering turned grey in some places and these looked like detached from the PCB! As the track of the FM input had got cut at two places, joined a jumper wire in its place. Cleaned and lubricated all the switches and connectors.
Powered it up in dismantled condition and found the set to be working very well in all bands. As the party did not want the tape recorder to be rectified, I left the mechanism part as it was. Refit the PCBs back in its case. Ran the set for several hours as a part of ageing test. Found it to be working very well all the time. Fixed a broken leg of the screw. Closed the set and kept it ready for pick up by customer. Mission accomplished, adding satisfaction to the collections!

I stopped counting seeing the amount of bad e-caps that were replaced in the photo Parasuraman. I wonder if maybe a bad electrolyte formula of that chemical substance still plays any significant role in wasting our environment in the way it does?
As the story leaked out over a decade ago when many wrong capacitors were produced on computer mainboards and other devices, after the correct formula got lost when an important employee took that formula with him when he left the firm?

Well, one cannot say that for sure. About that story you have heard, well, I have never heard of anything like that. Is it such a difficult formula that another cannot find it, with all the research facilities available?

Fantastic thorough repair as always Parasuraman. Like previous comment I was wondering why you needed to replace all the caps as only 3 were really bad and leaky in the photos!

Whenever I notice many of the caps are out of normal ESR, I go for total change. Moreover, I strongly believe from my experience that replacing these old caps give fresh life to devices. The set returns to its near original condition, as I have explained in my previous articles!

Every tough job remains tough only until we set our hands and start. Once started, the job will be over sooner than we can envisage! It is as easy as that! It is always the time spent on lingering over a problem that brings tension. The slogan is always, attack the problem and it will be over in a short-while!
