Burst Capacitor And Dry Solder Found In FOXIN Computer ATX MODEL FPS500S
This is one among the five Computer SMPS brought from the hospital for repair. As the cleaning was already done by the staff there, I straightaway investigated the reasons for its failure. Found a cap bulgy and dry solders all around. A couple of components were found to be rusted too, which cleared up on cleaning with IPA.
The SMPS fan did not rotate even when I tried hard. It was stuck like cemented. Any amount of lubrication also did not free it necessitating a replacement.
I checked the two tank capacitors and found the values were way out. So, replaced all the electrolytic capacitors on the board, before I did the complete retouch of the board with fresh solder.
The SMPS was found to be working very well on test.
I am sure some of you at least might wonder why am I doing servicing these SMPS, as new replacements were available at economic rates. Well, in this way, I am not only saving a lot of money for the hospital, but also preventing large pile up of E-Waste. The cost of repair is confined only to the cost of components as my service is free to this hospital.
No need to say that mission got accomplished again and satisfaction found its way very easily to its collection place.
To conclude the article, here is a picture of all the components replaced in this SMPS ATX. The fan was retrieved from an old discarded ‘beyond repair’ SMPS (control IC not available for replacement).

Although you again was fully able preventing the units from going 'E-wasted', the many bad e-caps and other bad parts of course were still added to that pile no less. And the many quickly going bad electrolyte capacitors sadly never are going to change that.

Sadly enough this is indeed true Albert! Taking also in account that Parasuraman's reference about the cheap price of these power supplies,which is also a true counter motivation for repairs, I always prefer to exploit every component to the limit of their operational life, instead of performing any wholesale replacements of them.
Of course, talking about e-caps especially, when the component reaches the "red" zone its replacement should be considered as obligatory.
Nevertheless,any successful repair reduces the e-waste pile in a certain degree, depending upon the repair strategy...
The environment suffers mainly because of lack of ANY attempt for repairing electronic equipment (and not only that...), due to various and many, more or less known reasons, with cheapness of buying new equipment being the number one in the relevant list...But it seems that this will not last for long, the proof being the high rate of increasing prices lately, due, again, in various reasons, with overtaxing being the leading one...

Indeed getting new replacement parts no longer is a cheap economical option since starting from 1 July 2021 the EU puts these very huge sanctions on imported products by charging high extra taxes and handling costs plus import fees. Which completely destroys my fun in electronics as an affordable hobby. And 'mining' spare electronic parts from old boards and keeping a lot of spare parts in stock is now the only good option that is left! These absurd taxes only help the already well paid men and women in Brussels, and their absurd constantly moving to strasbourg, and it probably will crash the Euro until it is no longer worth anything. We already see many alarming signs of this.
Politics is also mostly done by people without any degree in science or technology studies. Which in my opinion makes their ruling most of the time worse!

Hello dear Albert van Bemmelen,
I have another opinion about new import taxes in the EU. I believe it's a very good decision because it is created to stop importing waste to the EU. Surveys show that most Chinese products imported are very bad quality products, that is bad for human health and most often break almost instantly, so the EU is full of Chinese crap. Replacement parts shouldn't become more expensive because there are already Chinese warehouses around EU to evade tax and there are plenty of parts made in Poland, Germany and etc.

It depends on the condition of the capacitor. As long as the cost of replacement does not become prohibitive vis-à-vis the price of a new device of same configuration, we can go ahead! Many thanks for your comments!

In this pandemic & various countries trade and taxation policies only way out is to Salvage components form unrepaired equipments. i.e Micro Switches /MOSFET /IC's /Transformers/Diodes/transistors /capacitors and many more......
