Solved Not Taking Load Problem In Computer ATX Power Supply Model FOXIN FPS-500T
This SMPS was brought to me with the complaint that it was getting on, but not taking load. I opened and cleaned the inside thoroughly using various brushes. Let us have a look at the board:
Then started my step by step troubleshooting. The outputs were coming when tested connecting a PS tester. Then I knew very well that the problems lie in the electrolytic capacitors, which were my favourite method of replacement.
Following readings that I took of the tank capacitors would speak for itself:
One of the two 470uF/200V cap was reading 220.3uF and another 232uF. I replaced all the electrolytic caps on the board and retouched it thoroughly from one end to other. Then looked for any man made shorts like soldering overlapping the adjacent points or spilling over and found a couple of them. I do it under proper illumination and a large 10X Lens.

Then peeled off the seal of the cooling fan and applied a few drops of oil to release it from hardened grease. After this work, I connected a load of 12V 25W headlight bulb and checked. Following pictures are selfexplanatory, indicating voltage readings too:
After testing it for a satisfactory period, fixed the board and fan back in its cover.
Mission accomplished with satisfaction getting added.

I am not used to the primary capacitors aging, normally it is the secondary.

It undergoes a lot of strain, and its defects go unnoticed resulting in malfunctioning! Many thanks for your comments!

Parasuraman good job on the ATX Power Supply repair. I use something similar for a load to test computer power supplies.

Many thanks, dear Mark! I have bought two 100W halogen car headlight bulbs for testing it on a load of 200W. I am planning to connect it in series and do the test next time, to do a real test in almost full load.
