GEDEME Fridge Protector Repaired

This Fridge Line Protector Brand GEDEME, Cuba made, model CD 3200 was brought to me fully dead, and it had been checked on by other tech.

First thing done was to open the device, only 4 screws.

And then when the Bridge Rectifier was tested with the Digital Multimeter there were two diodes shorted (1N4007). They were extracted from the circuit.

At this time the four diodes were substituted for similar ones.

When the device was connected to the AC-mains (110 volt in my country) look what happened.

The yellow LED named Voltage bajo (Low Voltage) was lit all the time and it never was off. So there was another malfunction in this device, so let´s check it again. Some components were checked on with the Digital Multimeter and look what I have found:

As you can see in the photo above there were two shorted-resistors, and both had no connection in the bottom side of the PCB. Both leads of these resistor were separated.

Note: I think this kind of situation could never happen if the manufacturer have a good quality check.

Afterwards when the device was connected into the AC-mains to check it on, look the result.

The red LED named En espera (Waiting) began blinking for about 3 minutes and a half, and later on look what happened in the photo below:

Now the green LED named Voltage normal (Normal Voltage) was on and the output voltage checked with the Digital Multimeter was 115. 2 volt. I´m used to check the output voltage (apart from Normal Voltage LED is lit) because the relay could be damaged and this way I´m sure there is voltage in the output.

    Nicely done Humberto! Maybe we can start to manufacture these devices in our Country too, or for that matter in the whole of Europe because we do not have these yet. But we do occasionally have a power loss. Once or twice a year, mostly because somewhere there probably is an illegal power tap from a Weed factory or something like that. It is uncertain if these thing also eventually will cause a Power Surge that could destroy our electronics.

    Hey Humberto,
    Good article! It is very frustrating when you find an obvious fault and then when you go to test it find that is not the answer. Never mind, it helps us to hone our diagnostic skills and it is worth working through the testing procedure for the satisfaction you get when you have finally repaired the item.

      Thnaks Robert, I could not find the culprit, me was finding a bad component all the time in the circuitry, as usaul, and finally the culprit was two leads together. A new experience for me and for the readers too.

    Hey Humberto

    Good job! Now, a few words about the shorted resistors and the effect they caused. First of all, the main problem is of course a design quality issue. Wherever (through hole) resistors are intended to be used in vertically mounted position on the PCB, if quality obeys high standards they should always have their long exposed terminal fully painted and therefore isolated to their adjacent and similarly exposed ones. Otherwise the space economy attempt through their vertical positioning (on the manufacturer’s part) has a high cost in failures (reflected on the owner’s part) as in your case here. Apart from that, and most likely, the previous technician himself had inadvertently caused this short trying to restore its proper function without taking equally proper care in what he was doing during his attempt.
    And some questions…Is this device powered by L.F transformer or is transformerless (capacitive)? Is it using the quad op amp LM324? Can you please answer me these questions? (It would be clearer to me if you had provided us with an additional photo showing the overall component side PCB view)…

      Hi Paris, first of all I´ve seen this kind of situation as you say: painted terminals. But I´ve seen too another method of isolation: the terminals are cover by a spaghetti, as we usually call in my country.
      This device is transformeless (capacitive). It has one or two (do not remember exactly now) ICs. It´s a pitty I do not have this device with me now, the owner is using it, but I´ll look for a similar to take some pictures and send them to you by means of Jestine Yong.
