Spring Sleeping Instrument Repaired
My grandson, who is 6 years old has suffered for many years from insomnia. He has many issues that he is dealing with, including Autism.
This Spring Sleeping Instrument is a little hard to describe. So, here is the explanation straight from the internet:
- How it Works: These handheld, USB-chargeable devices use micro-current vibrations to stimulate acupressure points (specifically PC8) in the palm.
- Mechanism: They aim to calm the central nervous system, reduce stress, and promote relaxation to help the user fall asleep.
Strange as it seems, this appears to work. The only problem is that is stopped working. Pressing the ‘on’ button would not bring on the LED light and the unit would not work. Although they appear well constructed, one of the failing points is the switches. Keep in mind that he rolls around in bed a lot and so this will get squashed regularly during the night.

Removal of the blue case was simple. It looks like a silicon sleeve that slips off from the main body.
Two screws held together the case. Yes, the negative wire broke off at that point but was later soldered into place.
After a close visual inspection, the centre ‘on’ button did not look right.
It seemed to be pushed in further than the others and did not have the distinctive click when the tactile switch was pushed.
Also, the button appeared to be offset.
Due to the small size of the tactile switch, it took a while to carefully heat the solder and remove the switch without damaging other components or surrounding trace.
Once the old solder was removed using wick and the area cleaned with isopropyl alcohol, the new switch was installed.
The wire that had previously fallen off was soldered back into place. The unit was now reassembled for testing.
The ‘on’ button was pressed, the LED light came on and a pulsing buzz could be felt through the raised silver surface.
Although this was a simple diagnosis, it took time and care to replace the small tactile switch.
I now had a happy grandson!

Sorry to hear about your grandson! But the deed done by you is damn good and a good gift to a grandson! Many thanks for sharing the repair story, which moved me too! I do agree that handling such tiny switches is a pain and causes eye strain too! Good job, well done, dear Mark!

You are right Mark.
I haven't always been as successful as I was in this case. ♂️

From a technical aspect you succeeded in an exam, and from a human perspective, you passed a test. In most families, other family members are emotinally and psychologically affected when a family member is facing a disturbing situation. Its like; when the head aches, the whole body becomes sick. We may go out of the way to make the suffering feel they are loved, and, they are comfortable and wanted.
