induction cooker fix

This Induction Cooker (referred to as ‘IC’ hereinafter for brevity) belonged to my son living in Bangalore and he brought it to me during one of his visits. The IC reported to have tripped the MCB when switched on one day. My first duty was to open and subject it to thorough cleaning.

It had collected a lot of dust and the vents of the fan were almost clogged.

After doing this, when I checked the IGBT, which I was sure to have blown, I found it to be dead short. So, I removed it. Then applied power through a bulb and found it remain lit, indicating a dead short somewhere else too. Then I checked the bridge rectifier and found it to be dead short. So, there sure was a power surge which would have blown both these components. I replaced the rectifier and found the power was on when checked again. The capacitors were ok. I checked all the components and found these also to be ok. The 18V, 5V etc. were also ok. There was no dry solder too, as it had a good coating of clear lacquer on it.

The number of the IGBT was N1600, datasheet of which was not available in the web. Anyhow I could fetch an exact replacement. After soldering the new IGBT, I refit the coil and fan and placed the top plate. Then applied power and found it to be working very well. I boiled a glass of water for testing purpose. My son was happy that he could carry it back the next day. Satisfaction also was hot enough to get added!

Good job on the repair. It is always good and satisfying when helping family members. You sounded too disappointed for not finding any bad capacitors…lol. Have a blessed day my friend

Perhaps voltage surge! I had no time to investigate as my son was leaving in the next day morning.

In the same way that a welding machine article is guaranteed to be written by Waleed, we can bet that an article about an induction cooker means wise words from Parasuraman!

    Another excellent repair.

What is the part number of the new replacement IGBT instead of the N1600?

I used the same number only. But it is better to use FGA25S as it is better rated and would last longer.
